FPL GW1 Best Captain: Better Option Than Haaland?

A new season of FPL is back and it’s time to choose your first captain of the season.

Whilst many managers will give Erling Haaland the armband by default, there is actually a better option for GW1.

Erling Haaland

  • Fixture: Burnley (a)
  • Anytime goal: 58%
  • Predicted points: 6.4

It will be a rare occurrence Haaland isn’t the most captained player in a given gameweek.

This is not only because of his ability to score against anyone but his ridiculously high ownership, too.

He blew the league away last season, scoring the most goals in a Premier League season ever (36).

The Norwegian also had the highest xG last term (28.5).

City face newly-promoted Burnley, who they beat in the FA Cup 6-0 with the striker scoring a hat-trick.

Furthermore, Burnley also have problems at left back and centre midfield heading into the new season.

Marcus Rashford

  • Fixture: Wolves (H)
  • Anytime goal: 51%
  • Predicted points: 7.2

Rashford was Man Utd’s top scorer last season, scoring 17 goals, as well as getting 7 assists.

He also had the second-highest xG for a midfielder (15.3), taking the fourth most shots (108) and third most on target (49).

Additionally, with their new signing Rasmus Hojlund a doubt for GW1, Rashford could deputise up front.

On the opening weekend, they face Wolves at home, who have barely strengthened their squad (and now lost their manager), and he has the highest predicted points of any player for GW1.

Therefore, it’s reasonable to claim Rashford is the best FPL GW1 captain.

Bukayo Saka

  • Fixture: Nottingham Forest (H)
  • Anytime goal: 38%
  • Predicted points: 6.1

With 14 goals and 12 assists last campaign, Saka had the fourth most attacking returns in 2022/23.

The winger had the 5th most shot-creating actions (161) and the second most goal-creating actions (28).

He is on penalties as well, scoring twice from the spot last term.

Arsenal face Nottingham Forest at home in their opening game, who they beat 5-0 in the same fixture, with him having a 58% chance of a return.

Bruno Fernandes

  • Fixture: Wolves (H)
  • Anytime goal: 38%
  • Predicted points: 6.2

Another United player on this list, Fernandes is another good captaincy option for those who fancy them to perform well against Wolves.

He had the third-highest xA last season (10.7), playing the most key passes (119) and shot-creating actions (219), resulting in 9 assists.

Moreover, he scored 8 times, taking the 6th most shots overall (90).

Bruno is the designated penalty taker at the club, scoring twice from them last season, which gives him one advantage over Rashford as a captain.

It’s also fair to say that Fernandes is more likely to play 90 minutes.
