FPL GW28 Best Captain: Can We Look Past Arsenal?

GW28 is a blank gameweek which sees 7 teams with a fixture.

With the absence of Man City and Haaland this week it opens the door for Arsenal and Spurs assets who both have favourable fixtures.

However, Arsenal did play a grueling 120 minutes just three days before their match against Crystal Palace.

Let’s discuss who the best captain is for GW28.

Harry Kane

  • Fixture: Southampton (a)
  • Anytime goal: 44%
  • Predicted points: 5.2

Kane (£11.7m) impressed again at the weekend scoring a brace and hauling a massive 13 points.

He extended his goal tally to 20 for the season with 6 assists. He is ranked 2nd for xGI (21.9), third for xG (16.8) in the league as well as ranking 1st for xA amongst forwards (5.07), creating 43 chances.

The Englishman has been involved in 54% of Spurs’ goals this season-most in the league. Furthermore, it is no surprise to see the Spurs forward rank second for anytime goal scorer odds (44%).

Kane will be looking to extend his tally against Saints this weekend in a favourable fixture against the league’s current bottom side. Southampton have conceded 41 goals this campaign, (16th) from an xGC of 37.1 (9th).

However, it is worth noting Saints have kept 3 clean sheets in the past 5 games and 3 of these have included the likes of Man Utd, Leicester and Chelsea.

On the other hand, Spurs have had no trouble finding the net this season scoring 49 goals (3rd), from an xG of 44.9 (7th). This has been predominantly done to Kane and his incredible finishing.

The forward has a fabulous record at St Mary’s. Over the past 5 years in this fixture, Kane has scored 4 goals and 4 assists.

Bukayo Saka

  • Fixture: Crystal Palace (H)
  • Anytime goal: 36%
  • Predicted points: 6.0

Saka (£8.5m) has been Arsenal’s star man this season. He has registered double figures for both goals and assists with 10 of each.

He has scored 152 points this season (3rd) amongst midfielders and is still Arsenal’s most creative player, supplying 57 key passes (5th) and 18 goal-creating actions (2nd).

The addition of set pieces bodes well for Saka as Arsenal have scored 13 times (1st) from corners and penalties will make him a popular captain this week and rightly so.

Saka is in fine form and has scored 43 points in his last 6 games. Ranking 4th overall with an average of 7.2 points per game.

With the Gunners being heavy favourites to score the most goals this gameweek, along with Saka ranking 1st for predicted points he could be the alternative option to Harry Kane.

Gabriel Martinelli

  • Fixture: Crystal Palace (H)
  • Anytime goal: 36%
  • Predicted points: 3.3

Update: Martinelli played 120 minutes against Sporting in the Champions League. Therefore, we now have him at 50% to start which diminishes his captain appeal significantly.

Martinelli (£6.6m) has been a fantastic asset all season and has certainly thrived over the last few games with the addition of Trossard.

With this addition, Martinelli tends to drift into more advanced positions centrally and the success is evident with 3 goals in his last 3 starts.

The Brazilian winger has 12 goals this season and 5 assists. He has an xG of 8.8 (3rd) amongst midfielders and an xA of 6.11. He has now progressed to being the 2nd highest scorer amongst midfielders.

Martinelli has scored 48 points in the past 6 games ranking him 3rd in the player form table.

Arsenal have a favourable home fixture against Palace in GW28. The Gunners continue to score with 62 goals (2nd) from an xG (51.6).

They are the favourites to score 2.5+ goals this week and it wouldn’t surprise managers to see him on the score sheet yet again this week.

Ollie Watkins

  • Fixture: Bournemouth (H)
  • Anytime goal: 38%
  • Predicted points: 4.7

In the past 6 gameweeks Watkins has amazingly ranked 2nd in the league for NPxGI and big chances.

Aston Villa face a struggling Bournemouth side who are 19th for NPxGC in this time frame.

With an impressive 7 points per game average in the last 6 games, Watkins has certainly stepped up to the plate as Villa’s talisman scoring 6 times in his last 7.

The English striker has a seasonal xG of 10.8 and an xA of 2.2. The fixture will suit the striker as the Cherries have conceded 51 goals (20th) along with conceding the most shots per game (16.8).

He has a 38% chance of scoring this gameweek (5th) of all players and at just 10% ownership would be a big differential captain.

Our ever reliable points predictor has Saka and Martinelli very close at the top. While Kane, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, is down in 5th place.
