Who are the best FPL Captains – GW17

With FPL GW17 midweek action set to commence in 12 hours time (as of writing), it’s time to go through some of the captaincy options. As well as the standout Salah, there are a couple of alternatives worth considering.

With some Premier League games under doubt due to the current COVID outbreak, it would be advisable to have the C and the VC from players in different matches.

Disclaimer: Cristiano Ronaldo was set to be an option. However, Tuesday’s night fixture between Brentford vs Man United is now listed as a blank. This is due to the current outbreak of many Man United first-team players testing positive. The sides will now have their match, scheduled for a double gameweek later in the season.

Mohamed Salah

  • vs: Newcastle United (H)
  • Chances of scoring: 69%

Once again, the Egyptian remains as a standout option for another gameweek. Considering the form and his opponent this coming GW, it comes as no surprise.

Since he became a Red in 2017, he has delivered returns in every corresponding fixture against Newcastle United. From the four appearances he’s faced them, he has scored four goals alongside an assist.

Since his sole blank coming in GW2, his form line has been incredible. From his 14 appearances since he has scored 13 goals and provided 8 assists.

Furthermore, Newcastle have been poor defensively. From their last five gameweeks, they have conceded 10 goals, the most of any side.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

  • vs: Newcastle (H)
  • Chances of scoring: 16%
  • Chances of keeping a cleansheet: 58%

The top points-scoring defender has a great platform to continue his immaculate performances with yet another favourable opponent.

TAA has returned in five of his last six matches, which includes returns in his last three affairs at home. In that time, he has also picked up 12 bonus points. This has taken him to 21 in total, which is the most of any player in the game.

Liverpool’s first choice right back has also outscored Salah in Liverpool’s last three home games. These matches have included Arsenal, Southampton and Aston Villa.

The Reds have as well kept nine clean sheets this season, which is the equal most alongside Manchester City.

Bernardo Silva

  • vs: Leeds United (H)
  • Chances of scoring: 35%

The Portuguese is a reasonable captaincy shout, with the current form he is in. With his secured starts and extensive minutes, he has been one of the few City players to be able to showcase how much of a fantasy gem he can be.

Bernardo has only failed to play 90 minutes in two of his 15 league starts this season. To complement this, he hasn’t missed a minute in his last 11 starts.

This is what makes him a seemingly better captain option than his teammates. Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling and others can all be considered but it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see any of them on the bench.

He has also been worth his value, providing five goals and an assist from his last six games. Behind Alexander-Arnold, he is the second most in-form player in the game, scoring 49 points in his spell of the last six matches.

Leeds have been frail at the back themselves, keeping just the three clean sheets this season. Only Newcastle and Watford have had less than them. Bielsa’s men have conceded five goals in their last two league matches.
