Who are the best FPL Captain Picks – GW18

With a short turnaround in matches, it’s time to go through some of the viable captaincy choices for GW18. The last gameweek before Christmas is classified as a blank, with half of the sides having no fixture.

It would be somewhat dangerous to go without Mohamed Salah, but there are a couple of other decent shouts too to help climb the ranks.

Mohamed Salah

  • vs: Tottenham (a)
  • Chances of scoring: 51%

The Egyptian is having his best season to date, and that’s say something considering his Premier League record. He has only blanked in one of his 17 gameweeks!

Salah’s goal on Thursday has now equaled a record with Jamie Vardy, by scoring or assisting in his last 15 Premier League matches.

He faces a Spurs side who haven’t played for nearly two weeks and have had three postponements of their own.

The Egyptian also has a welcoming record against the North-Londoners. He has scored five and assisted one in his nine league appearances against them. Go against him, at your peril.

Joao Cancelo

  • vs: Newcastle (a)
  • Chances of scoring: 15%
  • Chances of keeping a cleansheet: 54%

The appealing alternatives are any of the City attacking-minded players, as they face against statistically one of the worst defences in the league.

The Portuguese full-back has had his inevitable rest through the festive period. He is now fully rested after serving his one match suspension against Leeds on Tuesday night.

Cancelo’s total of four double-digit returns this campaign, ranks equal-top with any Man City player. He also scored in City’s corresponding fixture last season, scoring a goal in their 4-3 away win back in May.

Phil Foden

  • vs: Newcastle (a)
  • Chances of scoring: 41%

Another City player who has drawn interest recently is one of Pep’s most trusted, Foden. When the 21-year old has been available, he has started nine of his possible 11 matches this season.

He returned to the scoresheet against Leeds on Tuesday night, supplying a goal and an assist in their monstrous 7-0 victory.

His away form has been compelling as well, scoring 35 points in total from his last four away outings, scoring three and supplying two assists.

Ollie Watkins

  • vs: Burnley (H)
  • Chances of scoring: 38%

Update: Aston Villa vs Burnley has been postponed so do NOT captain Watkins for GW18.

Watkins seems to be the answer to every forward conundrum, as we approach an unforeseeable blank gameweek. He is the most transferred in player as we approach Saturday’s deadline.

This movement is cemented with reason as well, having scored a goal and supplying an assist in their 2-0 win to Norwich on Tuesday night. He also registered six shots in the box, which was the most of any player.

Since Steven Gerrard has come in as Villa manager, he has turned into the talisman for their side. The former Brentford man has been involved in 44% of Aston Villa’s PL goals this season.

Additionally, the 25-year old has played 90 minutes in each of his last 14 league matches.
