Who are the best FPL Captains – GW19

As we embark on the first of three FPL gameweeks in seven days there’s no better time to make up some ground in the rankings. More importantly, it can be the captaincy that can set you from a good score to a fantastic gameweek.

Here are some of the standout options for the armband for the Boxing day fixtures. And yes, there is a notable absentee.

The Liverpool vs Leeds and Wolves vs Watford have been postponed. They will therefore be rescheduled into a double gameweek.

Cristiano Ronaldo

  • vs: Newcastle (a)
  • Chances of scoring: 56%

In Mohamed Salah’s absence, Cristiano Ronaldo is the standout captain choice for GW19.

Ronaldo faces the worst defence in the league in Newcastle. The Magpies have conceded 41 goals this campaign, which is five more than the second-worst opposition (Leeds with 36). This has come with conceding 11 in their last three matches.

Man United’s 16-day break prior to their last league game does help his cause too. The Red Devils last played on Saturday, December 11 away to Norwich, coming away with a 1-0 win. During that time, the Reds have had two postponed matches, against Brentford and Brighton.

The Man United talisman also boded well in the reverse fixture back in GW4. He scored a brace in his homecoming debut, coming away with 13-points which included three bonus points.

Son Heung-Min

  • vs: Crystal Palace (H)
  • Chances of scoring: 39%

Another worthy shout is Heung Min Son. The most attacking player for Spurs so far has continued his rich vein in form, scoring a goal in their 2-2 draw to Liverpool.

That makes it four returns in his last three matches. All of these games were at home and so is Tottenham’s fixture against Crystal Palace in GW19

Notably, Son has contributed to 62% of Tottenham’s goals scored at home this season.

As well as Palace having conceded in their last six league matches, this fixture has suited Son in the past. The attacking winger has scored in each of his five corresponding meetings against Palace.

His attacking counterpart in Harry Kane is also worthy of consideration. Kane notched his first attacking returns since GW8 last Sunday, scoring the opening goal against the Reds.

Furthermore, Kane registered six shots last gameweek, with two being on target. That is the most shots he’s had from any game this season.

The three-time golden boot winner boasts a decent record against the Eagles. From his 15 league outings, he has scored seven goals and registered five assists.

Joao Cancelo

  • vs: Leicester
  • Chances of scoring: 14%
  • Chances of keeping a cleansheet: 54%

The Portuguese full-back has been one of Pep’s key players for the reigning titleholders this season. He has been one of the safest routes to Fantasy points from Man City, playing a full 90 minutes in 16 of his 17 possible matches.

Coming off an 18-point haul last gameweek, he faces another favorable opposition in a defensively ‘leaky’ Leceister.

The Foxes have kept two clean sheets all season, and have conceded 27 goals thus far, ranking them 14th for goals scored. He too performed immaculately in their GW4 reverse outing, scoring 12-points at the King Power. Alongside a cleansheet, he came away with an assist and maximum bonus points.

He is ranked third with most points scored in the last three gameweeks, with 25. Only Gabriel Martinelli and Alexander-Arnold have scored more than him.
