Gameweek 26 Review
Gameweek 26 was the lowest scoring Gameweek since Gameweek 16. An average 43 points were scored. Harry Kane was once again the most picked captain. This was despite a tough away fixture to Liverpool. It was bitter sweet for those who did captain him as he missed a late penalty before scoring an even later one to give him four points. Theo Walcott was the most transferred in player following his brace in his debut for Everton. He was unable to replicate this in his return to the Emirates however. The top performing player for Gameweek 26 was Aaron Ramsey. He scored his first career hat-trick to give him a season equaling best score of 20 points. Sergio Aguero was the other player to get 20 points in a Gameweek this season courtesy of a hat-trick and an assist away to Watford.
Kane Hits 100
Liverpool and Tottenham both contributed to a thrilling momentum swinging game at Anfield. Mohamed Salah’s early strike gave Tottenham a taste of their own medicine from the previous week. The score would remain 1-0 all the way until the 80th when substitute Victor Wanyama scored an incredible goal on the half volley. From there it was all Tottenham. Harry Kane had the chance to win it from the penalty spot but hit a tame penalty down the middle which Loris Karius saw coming. Tottenham’s misery was temporarily compounded when Mohamed Salah, who else, scored a brilliant individual goal to give Liverpool a late lead. However, fortunately for Harry Kane, Erik Lamela was fouled in the dying moments of the game to give Harry Kane, and Tottenham, a chance to get their deserved draw. Harry Kane made no mistake this time to get Tottenham the point and his 100th Premier League goal.
Arsenal Moving On After Sanchez
Arsenal bounced back after a shock defeat to Swansea with a 5-1 smashing of Everton. It was their first victory since the departure of Alexis Sanchez. His replacement, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, was one of the stars. He was instrumental in Arsenal’s play throughout and contributed three assists to give him 13 points. It was Aaron Ramsey though who was unquestionably the man of the match. His first career hat-trick netted him a season high total of any FPL player with 20 points. Arsenal’s other two goals came from new signing Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Laurent Koscielny. Arsenal still sit 6th in the table and face back to back difficult fixtures against Tottenham and Man City.
Man City Held
It is likely academic at this point but Man City dropped two points away to Burnley. Danilo was the surprising first scorer courtesy of a Bernardo Silva assist. Man City were unable to find the clinching goal however and it was Johann Gudmundsson who punished them with a relatively late equaliser. The result left owners of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling disappointed as both failed to get anything other than appearance points. Man City still sit 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Problems For Chelsea and Conte
Coming off a shock home 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, Chelsea needed a positive response. They got anything but that with another big defeat at the hands of Watford. The 4-1 scoreline may have flattered the home side but Tiemoue Bakayoko’s first half red card brought it on. Troy Deeney opened the scoring after new signing Gerard Deulofeu was brought down in the area. Chelsea did think they had salvaged at least a draw when Eden Hazard scored an excellent goal from outside the area. With only 8 minutes to go the 10 men of Chelsea unraveled which let Watford score three late goals. With two disastrous defeats Antonio Conte may be hanging on to his job by a thread. Despite the recent problems Chelsea still sit in the Champions League places, one point ahead of Tottenham. Chelsea face a home fixture against West Brom in Gameweek 27 before back to back fixtures against Man Utd and Man City away.
