FPL Southampton Preview – 2017/18

As the new Fantasy Premier League season approaches we will be previewing all 20 Premier League teams – here is our FPL Southampton preview. Firstly we’ll analysis each team’s performance from last season. From there we’ll look at each team’s new signings, which players are most likely to play, their set piece takers and most importantly which players present the best FPL value.

FPL Southampton Preview – Team Performance

An interesting takeaway from Southampton’s home and away record is that they finished 17th in the Premier League table for home results. Away from home they finished 7th but still accrued more points at home. This shows how important home points are in the Premier League. A statistic Southampton will look to improve is their goals scored at home. Their 17 goals was only worsened by bottom place Sunderland. Time will tell whether this was an anomaly but should be taken into consideration for the new season.

Southampton Players to Pick for FPL

Southampton arguably have the best fixtures to start the Premier League season. This includes three home matches in their first four against bottom half teams. As a result it is sensible to have Southampton cover with at least one, ideally two, players.

Southampton Defence

Virgil Van Dijk (£5.5m) is suffering from an ankle injury. A greater threat to his starting position however is his constant transfer speculation away from Southampton. As a result he is a player to avoid until his future is clarified. In his place the favourites to start in the centre of defence will be the duo who played the second half of last season together – Maya Yoshida (£5.0m) and Jack Stephens (£5.0m). At right back Cedric Soares offers potential assists at £5.0m. However, Southampton’s premium defender is Ryan Bertrand (£5.5m) who scored two goals and provided 5 assists last season. Despite being Southampton’s most expensive defender he appears to provide the best value.

Southampton Midfielders

Certain starter Oriol Romeu (£4.5m) and the reliable Steven Davis (£5.0m) are players to stay away from due to their defensive roles and consequently lack of points. Southampton’s playmaker Dusan Tadic (£6.5m) failed to replicate his 2015/16 form. He scored three goals along with 7 assists in comparison to his 8 goals and 13 assists in the previous season. Until he starts to find this form again he is a player to steer clear of. Nathan Redmond (£6.5m), James Ward-Prowse (£5.5m) and Sofiane Boufal (£6.0m) will be competing for the wide positions. Whoever ends up being the most consistent starter out of this trio will likely be Southampton’s best value FPL midfielder. Time will answer this question but right now Nathan Redmond would be the most likely. New signing Mario Lemina will likely be competing with Steven Davis for his starting position in the centre of midfield.

Southampton Forwards

Penalty taker Charlie Austin (£6.5m) looked to be on for a successful season last campaign until a shoulder dislocation cut his season short. He has scored two goals in pre-season and will be hoping to be Southampton’s first choice striker. His main competitor Manolo Gabbiadini (£7.0m) has also scored two goals in pre-season. Right now it is difficult to give one the edge when it comes to predicting who will start against Swansea. With the current information available it is a 50/50 between the two. Southampton’s other forward option Shane Long (£6.0m) is all but certain to start the season on the bench.
