We’re already half way through the Champions League group stage and therefore MD4 looms in UCL Fantasy.
There are several players among the top point scorers who many would never have expected to be there.
The likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo don’t even make the top 30, perhaps indicating a new era is finally upon us.
However, the likes of Mohamed Salah and Robert Lewandowski are there. They are unsurprisingly among the most likely Champions League goalscorers in MD4.
Surprise performers include Daley Blind (32 points), Christopher Nkunku (31 points), Karim Adeyemi (30 points) and Hans Vanaken (29 points).
Here are the top 3 performers so far.
1. Leroy Sane
- Points: 41
- Price: €9.1m
- Picked by: 9%
- Fixtures: Benfica (H), Dynamo Kiev (a), Barcelona (H)
The German is the highest scoring player in the game so far with three goals and three assists.
Despite that he is still only selected by 9%, even ahead of an appetising home match against Benfica.
He isn’t cheap at €9.1m but has to be taken into consideration because of the form he is in.
2. Sebastian Haller
- Points: 38
- Price: €8.9m
- Picked by: 15%
- Fixtures: Dortmund (a), Besiktas (a), Sporting (H)
Haller has made an incredible start to this season’s Champions League, scoring 6 goals, including 4 on the opening matchday against Sporting Lisbon.
He has also been overlooked by many though in favour of higher priced options such as Lewandowski and Lukaku.
The former West Ham man plays Dortmund next, who Ajax defeated 4-0 in MD3.
It’s unlikely he will continue to produce UCL Fantasy points at the rate he has but at €8.9m he could save the money you need to buy big elsewhere.
3. Mohamed Salah
- Points: 34
- Price: €10.6m
- Picked by: 30%
- Fixtures: Atletico Madrid (H), Porto (H), AC Milan (a)
The third highest scoring player so far is Salah having already scored 5 times.
It also has to be taken into account that he also missed a penalty during that time.
He is simply in the form of his life in all competitions at the moment and is arguably a must-have.
Teams to Target
Real Madrid (vs Shakhtar Donetsk Home)
Real Madrid will face Shakhtar Donetsk in MD4, who they defeated 5-0 away last time out. The two most threatening players are Vinicius Jr. (€8.1m) and Karim Benzema (€10.1m), who have a combined 4 goals between them so far this season.
Vinicius also found the net twice in a 2-1 win against Elche at the weekend. Should you plan to use the Limitless Chip in MD4, both should be strong considerations.
Elsewhere, Eder Militao (€5.3m) is their highest scoring defender in the competition so far with 19 points. However, David Alaba (€5.6m) has a greater chance of starting and provides a better attacking threat.
Bayern Munich (vs Benfica Home)
Bayern Munich have had a great start to this season’s Champions League, scoring 12 goals and conceding none.
Their main man Robert Lewandowski (€11.7m) is selected by 35% of managers and already has 5 goals to his name.
Given he has an estimated 76% chance of scoring in MD4, he automatically becomes the best captaincy option. He is a must have for the remainder of the group stage.
The most selected defender in the Bayern team is Joshua Kimmich (€6.5m). The main factor for many managers selecting him is that he is OOP at central midfield, while also being on some set pieces. Consequently, he is a great pick if you can afford him because of how solid Bayern’s defence has been also.
Chelsea (vs Malmo Away)
Last seasons Champions League winners are definitely worth targeting for MD4 as they travel to a weak Malmo side. They defeated the Swedish team 4-0 last time out and a similar score line will be expected this time around.
We will also have the added benefit of knowing their lineup ahead of the deadline on Tuesday as they are in the early kick off.
There is some positions which will be key, such as the LWB spot as it is unknown whether Chilwell (€5.5m) or Alonso (€5.1m) will play. Whichever of them does play has the potential for big points.
With Kai Havertz (€9m) expected to play in a false 9 position once more he can’t be overlooked also. The German is only picked by 2% of UCL managers providing a strong differential option.
Man City (vs Club Brugge Home)
Any time Man City are at home it’s a fixture that can’t be ignored in fantasy football. According to the odds they are Champions League Matchday 4’s most likely winners at 90%.
The downside to Man City is working out who’s going to start. Anyone that plays FPL will know all too well how easy it is to get stung by Pep roulette.
Nevertheless, if they start, the likes of Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden and Joao Cancelo are all capable of massive hauls.
Villareal (vs Young Boys Home)
The 2021 Europa League winners face Swiss side Young Boys in MD4, having defeated them 4-1 last time out. The standout option is midfielder Arnaut Danjuma (€6.2m), despite the fact he is only owned by 2% of managers.
He has a goal and two assists so far in the Champions League, as well as a MOTM award against Man Utd.
It also has to be mentioned that there aren’t too many other standout options priced between €5m and €7m in midfield. That price also enables you to upgrade the rest of the squad while also hitting attacking returns.
If you are looking to cover their defence and have a free goalkeeper space, Geronimo Rulli (€4.5m) could be a great differential considering how solid Villareal’s defence has been in La Liga this season.
In addition to the players discussed above, here are some of the best players to consider transferring in ahead of Champions League MD4.
Sergino Dest (Barcelona)
The American is a really interesting option for two reasons: he is labelled as a defender in the game but has recently moved to the wing and is very cheap at just €4.9m. Ahead of the Dynamo Kiev game in MD4, he is owned by an incredible 1%.
As a result, he is definitely worth trying to fit into your side. In the 5 games he has played at RW, he has delivered two assists.
Noah Okafor (RB Salzburg)
Noah Okafor is priced at just €5m and is yet another OOP in the game as he plays up front for Salzburg alongside Adeyemi (€7.3m).
He is fresh off the back of a brace against Wolfsburg in MD3 and has showed in the Austrian league this season that it wasn’t a one off performance.
The Swiss player has 5 goals and 4 assists in 11 Bundesliga games, averaging a goal every 85 minutes currently. Therefore, it’s an obvious decision to upgrade any €4.5m midfielders to Okafor.
Ben Chilwell (Chelsea)
As mentioned when talking about the Malmo vs Chelsea game above, we will know the Blues team before the deadline on Tuesday.
Chilwell has started all of Chelsea’s last 5 matches, excluding the EFL Cup game vs Southampton, where it was mainly a second string side anyway.
If you look at his stats over them last few games in the Premier League this season, he is second for defenders in terms of touches in the opposition box (11) and is also second for shots (7).
He is owned by just 1% of managers ahead of MD4, despite the favourable statistics.
With that said, should Marcos Alonso get the nod he is an equally good option.
Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich)
UCL Fantasy’s current top points scorer has looked really dangerous alongside Lewandowski and Gnabry in every game they’ve played this season. In his 16 appearances, he has managed to get 7 goals and 8 assists.
He is still selected by under 10% of managers and this could be because many have opted for three premium forwards. With Erling Haaland (€11m) and Romelu Lukaku (€10.6m) ruled out with injuries for a while, a transition to Sane seems the most logical option.
With Lewandowski, Gnabry, Kimmich etc to choose from, there is nothing wrong with doubling or even tripling up on Bayern Munich players.
