Should You Buy Wout Weghorst in FPL?

Wout Weghorst has completed his loan move to Man Utd, resulting in his time being cut short with Besiktas.

The Dutchman already has premier league experience. He was a part of a Burnley side who were relegated.

In FPL, Weghorst has been given a £6.0m price tag, which on initial glance seems reasonable.

Interestingly, this is £0.5m cheaper than what he was at Burnley, and we could see him feature as soon as GW21.

Update: Since this article was posted, Weghorst has indeed become a starter for Man Utd, likely due to Anthony Martial’s injury.

We feature Weghorst on our best Man Utd players to transfer in for DGW22.

Goal Record

When it comes to forwards in FPL there’s nothing more important than how often a player can score goals.

Weghorst has impressed in Turkey, scoring 8 goals in just 16 appearances.

As well as this, he registered 4 assists. This demonstrates his ability to link up play and shows he does have creativity in addition to scoring.

The 6ft 6′ giant scored twice from 20 games (17 starts) during his time at Burnley. However, it’s worth noting that he underperformed his xG during this time which was 3.86.

The striker created 7 big chances and had 3 assists to his name and he has now swapped a relegated Burnley for potential title contenders Man Utd.

Consequently, it seems slightly naive to base his FPL prospects on his time with relegation-threatened Burnley.

Among the 30 shots he took in the Premier League last season, a whopping 24 of these were in the box proving he gets himself into dangerous areas and where FPL managers will want him.

Statistically, at Burnley, no player bettered his presses per 90 (48.7). His work off the ball will certainly be appreciated by manager Erik ten Hag.

Although this doesn’t necessarily get FPL managers points, it could influence ten Hag into giving Weghorst game time and, who knows, commanding a starting berth.

Will Weghorst Start ?

Weghorst has been immediately put into the Man Utd starting 11 away to Crystal Palace. He played 68 minutes.

His exact chances of starting in GW21 can be found on our Premier League starting lineup predictions page.

His starting place will likely depend on his initial form. Should he start well then he could quickly become ten Hag’s first choice striker.

Martial has started the last 5 games for Man Utd and at the moment is ten Hag’s number-one striker.

However, during this time martial has only one goal to his name and the Utd boss admitted that he was keen to recruit another striker.

He was quoted as saying: “His [Martial’s] physical load is not, at this moment, so high that he can’t play every third day a game of 90 minutes” suggesting that his minutes will need to be managed.

Furthermore, Martial is injury prone, as evidenced against Man City and the weeks beforehand, which only adds to the chance of Weghorst being given a starting berth.

Man Utd are the only English side who are still in 4 competitions and rotation will be key.

Man Utd Have Good Fixtures

After Arsenal (a) in GW21, Man Utd go on a run of great fixtures.

They will likely have a Double Gameweek in GW22. If so, they would face Crystal Palace (H) followed by Leeds (H).

This would give them a fantastic DGW and would almost make three Man Utd players mandatory.

If you already have three Utd players then it’s probably wise to stick with them, as it seems for now that he will start on the bench.

Nevertheless, should Martial get injured, or Weghorst does indeed become a starter, then you should strongly consider buying him.

A £6.0m starting forward for Man United isn’t something that can be ignored.

It should be noted that the Brentford game in GW25 will be a blank for Utd should they make it through to the Final of the Carabao cup. They have an 82% chance of doing so.
