Gameweek 23 Review
Gameweek 23 was a high scoring week for FPL managers with an average points tally of 58. With a home fixture to Everton it was understandable that Harry Kane was Gameweek 23’s most picked captain. He rewarded those with two goals earning him a spot in the weekly Dream Team. Jesse Lingard was the most transferred in player but despite a 3-0 victory for Man Utd he only scored two points. The top performing player for Gameweek 23 was Marko Arnautovic. He has now scored 52 points in the last 5 Gameweeks he has participated in. His two assists and a goal resulted in an impressive 16 points this week.
Bournemouth Beat a Troubled Arsenal
Arsenal threw away a 1-0 second half lead to lose 2-1 away at Bournemouth. Whether or not transfer speculation surrounding Alexis Sanchez isn’t clear. What is clear however is that Arsenal are now 8 points off the Champions League places. Their only goal of Gameweek 23 came from Hector Bellerin who has now scored a goal in his last two games. Bournemouth sit in 13th place, four points above the relegation zone.
Liverpool End City’s Undefeated Run
Liverpool handed Man City their first defeat of the season after a thrilling 4-3 win. Man City went undefeated for the first 22 Premier League games of the season. At one point Liverpool took a 4-1 lead but even with 10 minutes to go Man City were still in the match. This was proven as Man City scored two late goals to create an exciting finish. There were several high FPL scorers in the match. The highest of those was Ilkay Gundogan who scored a late goal and provided an earlier assist to get 13 points. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also provided a goal and an assist on his way to 12 points. It was the first time he has returned double digit FPL points since his big summer transfer. Naturally Mohamed Salah was the third highest scoring player in the match with 11 points.
Chelsea Held at Home
A resolute Leicester team took draw at Stamford Bridge despite playing the last 20 minutes with 10 men. Ben Chilwell was the recipient of this sending off. The result puts Chelsea into the 4th place, behind Liverpool. It was a disappointing week for FPL managers who kept faith with Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata. Between them they got 2 points. Eden Hazard was surprisingly removed before the 60 minute mark whilst Alvaro Morata did last the whole 90 but received a booking. It will be interesting to see if FPL managers stick with Chelsea players over the coming Gameweeks because despite a lack of points they do face teams from the bottom half of the table in the next four Gameweeks.
Tottenham Take Everton Apart
Tottenham scored another four goals against a much improved Everton side. It was an important victory as Liverpool beat Man City to increase the difficulty to get into the Champions League places. Unsurprisingly Harry Kane was among the goalscorers with two of them. This resulted in another 13 points for the Premier League top scorer. Heung Min Son also continued his good form and equaled Harry Kane’s 13 points. This was his fourth double digit return of the season. Despite the good form for Tottenham FPL managers should be cautious of not being overloaded with Spurs players. They face Southampton (a), Man Utd (H), Liverpool (a) and Arsenal (H) in their next four fixtures.
