How Good Are Your Captain Picks?

Your captain points throughout a Fantasy Premier League season make up around 25% of your total points.

You can’t get your captain right every week. But if you can get it right more often than not, you should have a good season.

Some of you might feel you have been unlucky with your captain picks, or made poor choices. Others will think they get it right every gameweek. The tool below shows you exactly how your choices have performed — just enter your, or anyone else’s, FPL team ID.

Your team ID is the number in the address bar when you view your team on FPL — the bit after /entry/. Show me how.

What the tool shows

Every gameweek’s captain, what they scored, and how that compared with the average captain across the top 10,000 managers. A pick counts as successful when it beat that average.

The comparison uses the raw player score rather than the doubled one, on both sides. Comparing your doubled haul against an average manager’s raw score would make everybody look twice as good as average, which is the sort of flattering error that makes a tool useless.

You will also see your best and worst calls of the season measured against the crowd, your biggest single haul, and which player you have trusted most.

Why captaincy decides seasons

Roughly a quarter of a season’s points come from the armband, and in a good year closer to a third. No other weekly decision has that leverage — a transfer gains you a few points, a captain call can gain fifteen.

It is also where rank is won rather than points. Captaining the same player as everybody else gains you nothing on the field even when he hauls; getting a differential right moves you thousands of places. Our most captained table shows what the top 10k are doing, and our captain picks page ranks the options for the coming gameweek.
