Since their introduction FPL bonus points have become an extremely important part of Fantasy Premier League. With that being said we're going to look at which players are most likely to get this season's bonus points.
How do you get FPL Bonus Points?
Knowing the factors that result in players getting bonus points is vital. Knowing these will allow you to make more informed decisions when picking players. The most notable FPL bonus point scoring criteria is that forwards scoring a goal get 24 points. This means if a forward scores two or more goals they are very likely to get the three bonus points. FPL Bonus Points Analysis
Where are the Defenders?
Interestingly only two defenders feature in the top 20 players for FPL bonus points. However, when we look at the BPS (Bonus Points System), which is the total bonus points score that determines the award of the bonus points, defenders feature more prominently. For example, Tim Cahill, Steve Cook, Ashley Williams, Nathaniel Clyne, Jan Vertonghen, Charlie Daniels and Nacho Monreal all feature in the top 20 for BPS but fail to do so for the award of the actual bonus points themselves. This indicates defenders BPS are shared out whereas forwards, and midfielders, are awarded to individuals. Therefore it is the bonus points that should be taken into consideration at a greater weighting than the BPS scores.
The Top 20 for Bonus Points
Unsurprisingly Harry Kane leads the way for BPS and is tied for bonus points. His 33 FPL bonus points across the season was also obtained by Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku. Just behind those four with 32 points is Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez. We can see that the bonus points are geared towards forward players which coincides with our initial takeaway from the BPS scoring criteria that forwards get 24 points for a goal. Midfielders get 18 points. Despite being a defender Cesar Azpilicueta actually got the second best BPS with 872 points. This is noteworthy because whilst scoring the second most BPS he was significantly behind on bonus points. Clearly BPS for a defender doesn't translate to actual bonus points as well as it does for a forward.
