How UCL Fantasy works

A squad of 15 from the 36 league phase clubs: two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards, inside a budget of 100 and no more than three players from any one side. Eleven start each matchday and one wears the armband for double points.

Transfers work differently from FPL. You get two between league phase matchdays, three or more between knockout ties, and an unlimited window at the end of Matchday 8 — so the squad you take through the league phase has to be built to last, while the knockout rounds allow a genuine rebuild.

Scoring

Familiar in outline, different in the details that decide a matchday. Recoveries and man of the match have no FPL equivalent, and both reward players a domestic manager would overlook.

Ball recoveries are the one to internalise. Three earns a point, and a defensive midfielder can clear ten in a match — three points before he has touched the ball in the opposition half. It makes players viable here who would never earn a place in an FPL side, and it is why our player stats table carries a recoveries column.

Man of the match is worth three and is awarded on UEFA’s own rating, so it tends to follow goals and assists rather than spreading itself around. Treat it as a bonus on top of a good haul rather than a reason to pick anyone.

Chips

Two chips, one use each, and neither has an FPL equivalent worth reasoning from.

  • Limitless— an unlimited budget for one matchday, with your squad reverting afterwards. Strongest where the best fixtures belong to the most expensive clubs, since it costs you nothing beyond the matchday itself.
  • Wildcard— a permanent rebuild with unlimited transfers. Worth holding until a set of fixtures turns, or until the squad you built for the league phase no longer suits the knockouts.

The armband is the other lever, and it doubles rather than triples — the cheat sheet’s captain list ranks the options for each night.

The league phase

Since 2024/25 there are no groups. All 36 clubs sit in one table and play eight matches each, four at home and four away, against eight different opponents. Nobody plays the same schedule as anybody else.

The top eight go straight to the round of 16. Ninth to twenty-fourth play a two-legged play-off for the remaining eight places, and everyone below is out.

That structure is why fixtures matter more here than domestically. Two clubs on the same points can have had entirely different runs, and with only eight matches a single blank costs proportionally far more than it does across a 38-game season. The fixture difficulty table is the quickest way to see who drew well.

Matchdays fall on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the two halves lock separately — so a Tuesday captain is settled before you need to decide on Wednesday. The final matchday is played simultaneously, which removes that advantage and the early kick-off edge with it.
